Baptism

Mormon view: Traditionally baptized at age 8 (by someone w/ proper authority), and then the laying on of hands for the gift of the holy ghost (by someone w/ proper authority). This constitutes confirmation into the Curch of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.
--(side note) I was baptized at age 8 or 9 (?). When I asked why, this was the answer; "So you can recieve the holy ghost and the holy ghost can guide you through life."
--Mormons believe that this is the way to recieve the holy ghost.

Christian view: Christians get baptized because of their faith, because they are saved. It is an outward showing of our faith and a first step to obediance. (obediance out of love & gratitude, not to attain salvation). We are proclaiming and rejoicing that we are God's children. It represents the washing of our sins and redemption:
1. As you stand in the water waiting to be baptized, you symbolize Jesus dying on the cross.
2. As you are lowered into the water, you symbolize Jesus buried in the tomb.
3. As you are raised from the water, you symbolize Jesus raising from the dead.
You are saying; I (old self) died with Jesus, I (old self) was buried with him, and now I am raised with Christ to brand new life!!!
