The Book of Abraham

The book of Abraham is in the Pearl of great price (mormon scripture). Joseph Smith translated the Book of Abraham from an ancient egyptian scroll that he bought from an antiquities dealer in 1835. He claimed that it contained the book of Abraham. At that time nobody could read ancient egyptian. But today egyptologist are able to read the scroll. In 1966, 11 papyrus fragments from the scrolls were found in New York at the Metropolitan museum of art. Along w/ the fragments, was a letter signed by Emma Smith (Joseph Smith's wife), certifying that the documents belonged to Joseph Smith. Due to facsimiles (pictures Joseph copied from the scroll and put in the Book of Abraham), they were able to determine that within the 11 fragments were pieces that Joseph Smith translated from. The 11 fragments were presented to the mormon church on Nov. 27, 1967. There was an article about it in the deseret news of Salt Lake City. They were able to determine that the scroll did not contain the Book of Abraham, but, actually contained an extended prayer on behalf of a dead ancient egyptian priest (Horus). Abraham is not mentioned once.
